Honorable Mention
Leeches and Divorce
Treezaa (T. E. Ballard)

I want to say they are black pipes
flowing with my blood, drawing their lips back
taking in the red milk. What of the correlation
between this and love, the way a body folds like paper
on to itself, over and over until it is small.
Hunger is an odd tool--
a leech attaches to a leg because it is warm
and there is nothing else. I thought of you
when the salt burned the dark bodies
how they refused to let go. All those years
when we did not speak and I pulled you deeper
even though it was bitter, semen
eating the soft parts of my skin.
Even now it is difficult to decipher
who was the beast or the being, or if
we were only two leeches
drinking the river in.
